For this analysis I chose an Interlude from Rex Orange County’s critically acclaimed 2017 album “Apricot Princess”
In terms of instrumentation the track is fairly simple, featuring a soothing piano arrangement accompanied by a piercing yet sultry saxophone that gives the track a luxurious feel.
The song opens with a gentle and melancholic piano melody, utilising major and diminished chords, sounding like a song one would hear at a wedding or in a formal setting, enhancing the luxurious velvety feel of the track. As the piano and saxophone intertwine they create a sense of emotional depth and introspection, the chords are played softly at first, then slammed as it rises near the 25 second mark, evoking a feeling of tranquillity and reflection.
There’s a simplicity in this track. Rex chose to focus primarily on the instruments without any voocals or narrative or heavy instrumentation added everywhere on this project. The piano is definitely the centerpiece of the interlude, successfully conveying a sense of contemplation and wistfulness, to me at least, all within 45 seconds. Within the wider context of the album “Apricot Princess” Rain man serves as a moment of calmness and emotional pause among the other lyric and production heavy tracks, the absence of these essentials allows the listener to interpret and connect with the emotions that might have not been able to have been communicated through words.
Thematically, Rain man contributes to the overall narrative of the album, which explores themes of love, self reflection, personal growth and dealing with loss, the tone and introspective melody of the track almost sounds like a culmination of all these themes. As an interlude Rain man serves as a breather, allowing the audience to sit and dwell in the intense moments played right before, as such this has become a fan favourite Rex track when it’s played live.
In summary, Rain man utilizes a simple yet emotionally evocative arrangement to create a tranquil and contemplative atmosphere. It’s placement within the project Apricot Princess allows for a moment of reflection and emotional connection within the broader narrative of the albums themes and emotions.
