Week 6

Unfortunately I was absent from weeks 6-9 due to financial problems , we discussed the work of Hakuna Kuala producers and the recent phenomenon in dance and electronica in Africa.

I am familiar with african music, However I’m more used to the afrobeats and Amapiano that have come out of africa and exploded into popularity in recent times and have exploded in popularity.

The musical landscape of Africa has always been rich and varied, encompassing a wide range of genres with strong cultural roots. Although the continent is well-known for its vocal skills, dance-centered beats, and traditional sounds, fresh artistic experession is now becoming apparent, particularly in the dance and electronic music genres. This progression showcases the inventiveness of African musicians as well as the merging of the contemporary and traditional sounds.

A group of innovative musicians operating under the Hakuna Kuala label have been leading the charge to redifine electronic music in Africa in recent years. These proucers, who are from all over the continent, are changing how people around the world view African music by creating experimental and Avant-garde music.

Kenyan rapper Slikback is one of these rising stars who’s shoe this fits. His palette is rebellious and unconstrained, fusing mesmerising rythms with gloomy atmospheric sounds. Songs like “///” and “Lasakeneku” are prime examples of his experimental style; they combine parts of several African musical traditions with cutting-edge electronic production techniques. The music of slikback perfectly captures the combination of modern sounds and a very African feel.

Jay Mitta, a Tanzanian producer, is another innovator recognised for his cretive approach to singeli music. His songs, including “Tatizo Pesa,” are colourful and energetic, incorporatign electronic elements into Tanzania’s street music culture. The end product is a fast-paced, dance-centred sound that enthrals listeners everywhere.

Due to my absence, I’m afraid I don’t have much to say but I will add that doing this research and acquiring knowledge about various subgenres and niche in a country where music is very one note has been a lot of fun and an interesting experience.
