After a few icebreakers to let everyone feel more at ease, we were asked, “What is a music producer?” as we sat down for the first lesson. In my head this topic was really changed to “what makes a GOOD music producer” And at the time, I considered someone who could write songs, produce them, record them, mix them, and master them to be a good music producer. This is probably because I want to be a multifaceted producer, and artists like Kanye, Pharrell, and others were my influences when it came to creating. However, as we went around the class discussing different ideas, I realised how stunted this frame of thinking was, the term Producer can be, for instance, If a Music producer is simply someone who composites or organises sound, couldn’t an orchestral maestro be classified as a producer? This reminded me just how vast and varied music is as a whole, and how it exists just as importantly for other people outside of my bias and preferences.
